End of the first week of the second month! We are cruising! And we are, once again, on the precipice of an epic weekend. Non-stop action ‘til Monday, which my wife is hoping to have off. Apparently, she put it in to have it off a while ago, but it never got “approved.” Then, earlier this week, her boss said she was “holding off” approval until they were sure my wife would get some “vital” reports out today. I’m not sure how that’s going. I hope well. It doesn’t help that my wife was not well earlier this week, and missed some work time. Also strange, was that her boss’s mother passed away earlier this week, and hasn’t been in office. I’m not sure how that all works. Hopefully, if my wife gets her task completed, someone else can approve the day off. It has been that kind of week, leading into this type of weekend. In some way, it feels like the weekend kind of started yesterday. Last night, Wagner, the guitarist from the Eruption, and I met with this guy Jim. I call Wagner: “Wagz,” and will do so from here on out. Wagz and Jim have known each other for a while. They used to work together with the guy Mark Miller, who passed away recently. Jim is the person organizing the memorial that we were asked to play. Apparently, Jim is a musician, and has been wanting to play with us for a long time, and now he finally has. He was very excited last night. They both were. We’ve been planning to play this memorial as a group, and last night was the first practice. We decided it would be best if just the three of us got together the first time, since we don’t really know what we’re doing yet. I’ll tell you what, Jim can shred, and as far as first practices go, they don’t get much better than last night. We were all mostly prepared, and it all flowed fairly well. In a couple of practices, we’ll be pretty good.
I’m sitting here
wondering whether I told you how strange it is that I lost a project, and then “boom,”
got another one. I don’t want to get too much into it, especially if I already
did. So, at least now I’ve mentioned it. I can say “the world works in
mysterious ways,” and now I can move on. I’m sure we’ll talk more about that in
the future. It is after all, something I am in awe of regularly. Tonight, we’re
going to see a friend’s band. He is a drummer, we call him Newman, because that’s
his last name. Newman hasn’t been in a band in a while. Even when he was in his
most recent band, it was pretty sporadic. But, he’s very supportive of other
acts. He goes to a lot of shows, so it’s our turn to go see him. He’s a good
drummer, and people often wonder why he doesn’t play more, and now he is, so we’ll
be supportive. However, it’s a cover band. Not that there’s anything “wrong”
with cover bands, but it’s usually a bunch of stuff that’s been played out. I know
people like hearing songs they “know,” but it’s rarely “awesome.” Also, they’re
playing for 3 hours! That’s a commitment. I’m not sure we’re making the whole
thing. It would have to be remarkable to stay the whole time. I’ll cross my
fingers. We should know quite a few of the people there, so who knows. You know
how it is, sometimes, if you’re hanging out with the right people, time seems
to just slip past you, and next thing you know it’s over. I’ll keep my fingers
crossed. Supposedly the kid who plays guitar is good, so that’s something to
look forward to. Apparently, he’s the draw. We’ll see. I don’t know that it can
be expected for us to stay for the entire show. You know how it is, around
10:30, the couch starts calling your name. Barstools are not really designed
for long-term sitting, although, on occasion they are used that way.
Tomorrow is my
wife’s company party. This year they’re having it at Sycuan. If you don’t know,
that is a local casino. It’s pretty nice there. We’ve been there a couple of
times, and I’d have to say, it is one of my favorites. Apparently, they’ve rented
a hall, and we’re going to “dance the night away.” We get dinner this year,
that’s cool. The food I’ve had there is good! The theme this year is ‘90s. ‘90s!
I still dress like I did in the ‘90s, how is that a theme?! Most of the stuff I’m
going to wear, I purchased in the “90s, so I hope I don’t get any grief for “not
dressing up,” ‘cause I don’t want to embarrass myself by letting anyone know
that these are clothes I’ve owned, and worn, for 30 years! At least I don’t
really have to “dress up.” Although, usually getting dressed up is kind of the
fun. I am going to put a little effort into it. I won’t look exactly like I
always do. I think most people will know I’m in costume. Even though it won’t
really be one. They are getting all of the managers a room, yay! That’s nice of
them. Party at Sycuan! I’ve got no problem with that. However, the next day is the
Super Bowl! I don’t even know if I’m allowed to say that. Oh well, I’m not
asking for money, so we should be alright. If the NFL hears about this, maybe I’m
moving up in the world! Anyway: This year we’re going to a friend’s house for
the Super Bowl. This is our first time doing something different for the Super
Bowl. This year it lands on a friend’s birthday, so we’re trying something new.
A double reason to party! Which is why my wife was hoping to have Monday off. I
think she’s trying to make it permanent. Nothing says “I’m a partier” like
needing the day after Super Bowl off. Oh well, I think they probably already
know.
