I’m kind of
excited today. Not only is JoZ practicing tonight, but the Calvins have a huge
show this Sunday. Besides both of those things, I’m also excited because today
while I was flipping through social media, I came across a music contest. There’s
a band called The Dead Milkmen. I’ve only heard a couple of their songs. I
thought they were cool, and I’ve always thought I should listen to more of
their stuff. So, they’re having this contest to see who can remix one of their
songs. For a while now, I’ve been hoping to be able to try mixing someone else’s
music. I thought it sounded cool. I listened to the track, and I was shocked at
how much it kind of sounded like JoZ a little bit. I always thought The Dead
Milkmen were a punk band, I was surprised how much it sounded like what JoZ is
doing. I went online, and signed up, and they sent me the tracks! I’ve been
messing around with them all day. I can’t believe it! Not only am I getting to
mix someone else’s music, but it’s a moderately famous band! I am having fun. I
can’t believe how much it resembles what I’m working on now. This is going to
be cool. Can you imagine if I win!? The prize is not all that huge, but I don’t
care. This is right up my alley, and just the chance that they will get to hear
what I come up with, is a prize. I spent all morning on it, and now I’m going
to have to force myself to do something else for a while. I got to a good
stopping point. I know what all the tracks are, and labeled them. I got them
all cleaned up so I can do my magic. It’s exciting and fun. Okay, I think I’ve
said that enough. Sorry for rambling, but this is all as of a couple of hours
ago, and you’re the first person I’ve told. It’s due the 31st, wish
me luck!
Mother’s Day was
pretty cool. I made reservations for all of us at this place called Casa
Gabriella. All of us being my wife and I, our mothers, my father, and my sister.
Unfortunately, our daughter couldn’t make it, but she and my wife got together
on Tuesday night to make up for it. Casa Gabriella is in La Mesa, where we used
to live. We still go there often. We lived there for 20 years, so it’s kind of
hard to change it up. We had never been to Casa Gabriella before. We’d been to
the building several times, during other concepts, but this was our first trip
to the new one. We’d heard mixed reviews. But you have to be careful taking in
the “locals” review. Sometimes people just don’t like new stuff, no matter what
it is. And I know when we first heard they were putting in another Mexican restaurant,
a lot of us were like: “What the fuck?” There are 3 Mexican restaurants on the
block now! But none are as nice as this one was. We enjoyed ourselves. I
thought the food was good, we’ll definitely go back. Sorry if this is starting
to sound like a Yelp review. I did leave them a review, and it may, or may not,
sound a lot like this. When I was making the reservations, they said there were
only 3 times left. I was glad we got a spot. However, I did take the later one,
at 1:45. As we were dining, I couldn’t help but notice that there were a lot of
empty tables. It is a patio destination, but we chose to sit inside. By the
time we left, we were the only people inside. I’m not sure what that means, I’m
just saying I noticed, and it seemed odd, especially if there were no
reservations to be had. It’s just nice that we all like getting together, and
doing things together. It’s so much more
peaceful this way.
Now we look
forward to the weekend. I don’t know how it’s possible, but it seems like the “hanging
out” season has officially begun. Last weekend we got invited to an impromptu dinner
with a group of people at The Riviera Club. It was the people we dog sat for,
and about 10 other people. It was nice. The food was delicious! I asked what
the occasion was, and they all said there wasn’t one, they just wanted to have
a dinner party. I was glad we were included. Now, tomorrow we’ve been invited
to another friend’s house for his birthday. We’ve known him a long time, and
have never been invited before, so it seemed a little out of left field. Plus,
we don’t see him nearly as much as we used to. Maybe he misses us. We like him
and his wife a lot, and it just seems weird that all of a sudden, we’re being
invited over. It starts at 5! That seems weird to me. A little early for a
weekday. Well, not for me, but perhaps for other people. Then, the following
Saturday we’re having dinner with yet another group of people. We used to hang
out with them a lot, but we kind of drifted after our children no longer went
to school together. We randomly ran into them at the Puscifer show, and have
been trying to schedule something, and now we have. It was good to see them again.
Dinner will be fun. On top of all of that, 3 shows in 2 weeks are coming up for
the Calvins. This Sunday is the whopper at the Holding Company. We’ve been
trying to get in there, and it happens on Sunday! Then we play again on Friday
the 24th. 5 days! And, I find it interesting that a lot of people I’ve
been talking to, seem more excited about the Bancroft show than the Holding
Company! I guess you just can’t guess about people. We weren’t even supposed to
be advertising that one yet. Oops. Then the 7th at the Ken. Geesh.
