Crossing Things Off The List

The weeks are all starting to run together. I’m starting to notice that without any real end of the week, it is impossible to differentiate between one and the other. It’s making me hyper-aware that there really is no time. The beginning and end of a day are only a perception, perceived by us, the inhabitants of Earth, and not actually real. It becomes necessary for us to define these beginnings and ends, for ourselves, and be glad that nature gives us some perceptible terminals that we may use to remind ourselves that we need a break. And that it is absolutely necessary for us to be aware when one thing ends, and another begins. Hindsight can only be 20/20 once the thing is over. Like someone on a drug induced binge, if we had been awake since the beginning of time, this would all be the same day. Busy weekends make me feel that way. We got up last Thursday and started preparing for our camping trip. Camping was fun. We didn’t really do much. Hung out mostly. Talked to people we haven’t seen in a while. Got caught up with the lives of everyone. There was a lot of down time. That might seem, at face value, like a perfect time to decompress. It is like being on another planet. Having that little bit of suspended reality makes it easier to not think about regular life for a while. That has it’s own benefits. That was one of the main reasons we were thinking it would have been a good idea to have that be the break between my wife’s jobs. Finish with one, go camping, then start the new job fresh. The job she’s leaving didn’t think it was that good of an idea. Especially since she missed a few days because of the seizure. So she came back for 3 days, and now is almost done with her 2nd day at her new job.

Camping isn’t that relaxing. As mentioned earlier, there’s a lot of down time, but it’s not physically relaxing. Our air mattress, while better than the ground, is not as good as our home mattress, so we don’t sleep as well. There aren’t a lot of comfortable places to sit. Our camping chairs, while better than the ground, aren’t as comfortable as our couch. Picnic tables are not ideal for a person my size. The bathroom is far away. All meals take an extra level of preparation. And, this may be the real culprit, we end up standing a lot. My feet and knees feel like I was standing for 4 days. And, I practically was. We probably stood for 6 hours the first night, and at least 12 hours for the next 2 days. That’s a lot of standing! Not too much relaxing about that. Then by the time we got home on Sunday, we had to put things away. We were kind of exhausted, so we just dealt with the perishables at that time. I thought I’d take care of the rest of it the next day when I had more time. However, our daughter thought Monday would be a great day to go car shopping. I didn’t want to affect the momentum, so we went car shopping. I didn’t realize we’d be gone all day, but I wanted to capitalize on her motivation. Apparently over the past couple of weeks she’s noticed that decent cars are not staying on the lots very long. She’s seemed to come around to the idea that if she sees something she likes, act on it! So we did. It turns out Monday was more of a scouting mission, and we had another day to make some big decisions.

I am happy to announce that at the end of Tuesday, she had finally purchased a vehicle. She is so excited. I’m so glad she’s happy. And I’m glad she wanted me to be a part. So, we can finally mark that one off our list! Wednesday, I had to do laundry. I postponed last week because I knew we’d be bringing home a bunch of dirty clothes from camping. It is fun standing/sitting around the campfire, but it makes your clothes stink! One of our camping friends told me that when they get home, she makes them all strip down in the garage, so the stinky clothes don’t even make it into the house. I’m not that hardcore. I didn’t actually get to putting away the camping gear until yesterday. It wasn’t that big of a deal, because they were in our spare car, which isn’t getting much use these days, so it wasn’t in the way. However, putting the camping gear away a week later, kind of made it feel like camping hadn’t been completed yet. Now it is done. Except for the fact that one of my containers of pickled eggs spilled some fluid in the car. Our spare car smells like vinegar and eggs. Not fun. I’m not sure when it happened, but I noticed it Saturday morning. I put some smell absorbers in there yesterday, I hope they work. Yesterday we also went to a Padre game. We went with my wife’s old work. She had already got the tickets, and people said they’d still love to see her, so we went. There weren’t enough seats for everybody, which was weird, but it was still kind of fun. More standing, yay! Free beer, hot dogs, and nachos, okay. We couldn’t really see the game that well, but I don’t really care that much, so it worked out. So here it is Friday, and I feel like I just finished last week, and we are on the precipice of another weekend. However, tomorrow I have practice, then a huge party. And, on Sunday, I have a gig at this Punk Festival, so no rest this weekend either! I like having things to do, but it makes it hard to keep things straight.
